Nobody likes to lose their precious hair, and be labelled a baldie. But is it possible to prevent baldness?

Preventing Hairloss

There are certain treatments available for various forms of hair loss, or alopecia. However, they have only limited success.

Baldness is mostly hereditary, there is no way to prevent it, really. However, there are other causes, too, that may cause you to lose hair. If you have no family history of baldness, certain precautions might help in preventing your hair from getting light .

  • Take proper nutrition in your food, as well as proper rest. Drink plenty of water, adn get enough calcium which is essential for healthy hair.
  • It is best to avoid colouring hair altogether. If at all you do, do not colour your hair any more often than every six to eight weeks.
  • Keep your body properly tuned as being ill might cause hair loss.
  • Keep the split ends of your hair trimmed, and use a good conditioner each time you wash your hair.
  • Avoid using a hair-dryer as far as possible, and let your hair dry naturally.

Some people who suffer from hair loss, resort to treatments claimed to be “clinically proven”. Examples for this are finasteride and topically applied minoxidil (in solution). They aim to prevent further loss and regrow hair. It is easier, as a general rule, to keep the remaining hair intact than to regrow lost hair. Anyway, the treatments mentioned here will be helpful to some people suffering from Androgenetic alopecia. The effectiveness of finasteride and minoxidil is not universally accepted.

In US, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has approved only two drug-based treatments for androgenetic alopecia, otherwise known as male or female pattern hair loss. They are finasteride (marketed for hair loss as Propecia) and minoxidil.

There also new technologies in cosmetic transplant surgery and hair replacement systems that can be completely undetectable.

In most cases, baldness cannot be prevented. But that should not make us lose heart and sit idle. Maybe it is quite possible that, in your case, hair loss is due to some preventable cause.
